Understanding Localization

July 28, 2021

Language provides a means for communication among and between people. It serves as a tool for expressing one’s thoughts and feelings. And when it comes to diversity, language is a bridge for building relationships between people and communities.

The age of globalization has brought people across the world together. Culture, religion, social norms, and languages, today everything is intricately connected on the global network.

As much as having a common language for talking about and across difference is essential for breaking down divisions, understanding and working together; it is important to manage the differences between people and account for everyone involved.

This is where the localization comes in.

Let us first understand what exactly is localization. In lay man terms, localization is the language or phrases used by the local people of area.

For example, an individual can speak English, but there is difference in the manner of speaking from someone who is from Los Angeles and New York, even if both are Americans born and raised. This difference, this essence, is what the locals put in the language transforming it completely.

The difference between a cabbie or a taxi; subway or tubes; there are numerous examples and you have to be aware of it when localizing an asset. One of the most common aspect of localization is synonymous words being used in while communication. Along with that, we have idioms, metaphors and anecdotes. A language without these devices fails to grab the psyche of the “locals”.

We at MoniSa deal with numerous such projects, where we have to make sure the subtitling of a video, or dubbing is done perfectly. Otherwise, people find discrepancies in the content. And in such a time, where the society is slowly progressing towards inclusion, such errors do not sit well with people.
