Religious texts are not informational content. A mistranslation of a single theological term can alter meaning in ways that are unacceptable to the communities reading the material. The client required that every translation preserve doctrinal intent — linguistic accuracy alone. This is a higher bar than standard TEP quality gates.
The 8 target languages included Patani Malay and other low-resource indigenous languages with no established machine translation engines or large parallel corpora to draw from. Linguist availability was limited, and the work needed translators with both linguistic proficiency and subject-matter familiarity in religious content.
On top of those constraints, direct translation was insufficient. Metaphors, analogies, and cultural references in the source text had to be adapted for each target community. What resonates in one indigenous culture may confuse or offend in another. The client expected cultural consultants, translators, to review every passage for appropriateness.

What MoniSa changed
We structured the project around three-person language teams and script-specific QA workflows.
- Three-person language teams:Each of the 8 languages was assigned a dedicated team: one translator, one editor, and one cultural consultant. The translator handled first-pass rendering. The editor reviewed for linguistic accuracy and consistency. The cultural consultant, a native speaker with deep familiarity with the target community's religious and cultural context, reviewed every passage for doctrinal fidelity and cultural appropriateness. This was not a spot-check role. The cultural consultant reviewed the output.
- Script-specific QA:The 8 languages spanned multiple script systems. QA protocols were tailored per script, character rendering, diacritical accuracy, right-to-left formatting where applicable, and conjunct character validation. A single QA checklist across all scripts would have missed script-specific errors.
- Doctrinal validation layer:Beyond standard linguistic and cultural review, we added a doctrinal validation step. Key theological terms were pre-agreed with the client before translation began. A glossary of approved renderings was maintained per language. Any deviation from the glossary was flagged and resolved before the batch moved to delivery. This prevented the most common failure mode in religious translation: well-intentioned but doctrinally inaccurate term choices.
- Batch delivery with feedback loops:Content was delivered in rolling batches across the 21-day timeline. Early batches allowed the client to provide feedback that was incorporated into later batches, a self-correcting process that reduced rework accumulation. By the final week, the feedback volume had dropped to near-zero because the teams had calibrated to the client's expectations.
